Place: Yayoi campus, Wood-based material and timber engineering lab. , 202nd room 5th building
Organizer: Graduate school of agricultural and life science sciences, Bio-material sciences Wood-based material and timber engineering lab. Master’s year 2 Ryutaro Sudo

Event summary

What was first introduced was the organization of the department, and the research contents of the laboratory, and facilities in the research building. Next, we introduced the equipment while showing the actual experiment. Finally, I presented my research and had a discussion. One of the experiments were scheduled to be observed after the discussion due to preparations.

Introduction of my lab.

What was first told to participants was that wood and wood-based material was able to be harvested in every half of century and to keep carbon on the ground. It will contribute to resolve some global environmental problems that steel and reinforced-concrete structure are replaced with timber one. Second was what researchers in the field of timber engineering and wood-based materials pursue after al and what our laboratory is focusing on. Specifically, in recent years, large-scale construction of wooden buildings has increased, and the required strength of the member has increased. To that end, it is essential to build a design system that leads from the strength of the material.to the entire building, therefore it was indispensable to carry out development and basic research on both wheels.

Visit facility and experiment

About the experiment, we observed two things: “In-plane shear test of cross laminated timber (CLT)” and “Rotational resistance test of traditional joint”.
there were discussions about the state of experiments and destruction here and there. In the woodworking room, there were students who happened to make specimens, so we explained her specimens while explaining wood processors. Then it could be told that these machine helps students take test pieces from full-scale specimen and conduct elemental test.

Presentation and discussion about my research

After returning to the room, it was delivered that the relationship between my previous research and future themes, and the position of my research in the whole field. I was pointed out the attitude of looking down on the field and the whole of my research and realized again my weakness of sticking to the details of the research. I was also asked about how to output research results and felt that there was a gap between “a simple and approximate method that anyone can use” and “an advanced and accurate method with high barriers.”

Impression

It was impressing for me that many of the participants were interested in our experiments and facilities.
From the student who researches the structure of the ship, it is impressed by the opinion that “the ship connects the members with rivets, so there is almost no discussion about the joint. That is characteristic of timber engineering”. Throughout the whole, there were lively discussions in various places regarding experiments and materials in front of participants at that time, and it was thought to be a meaningful time for many people because this event stimulated us, including myself of course.
