Shiono MIKI (6th batch student) visited the University of Mainz, Germany, to learn basic sclerochronology techniques.

Sclerochronology is the name of method of growth pattern analysis formed in biominerals (shell, coral, etc) and its field of research. Growth pattern analysis developed in dendrochronology (growth pattern analysis of tree rings) can be applied to the analysis of growth patterns in biominerals, eg. to reconstruct past climate changes. I visited the University of Mainz, Germany, to learn basic sclerochronology techniques as part of the Overseas Exercise in Proactive Environmental Studies I of the WINGS-PES Environmental Knowledge Professional Practicum Group (Subject Group C). Here I report its brief experiences.
