Overview of the 22nd Salon of Excellence
The 22nd Salon of Excellent was held on Nov. 8th afternoon with the theme of “International students in GSFS”. WINGS-PES students and SPRING GX students were invited to participate in this event. GSFS is characteristic of internationalization. Thus, we intended to take advantage of this feature to promote communication among students with different backgrounds in the salon. In talk 1 and talk 2, we offered several topics and ideas, such as cultural differences and international students’ efforts in adapting to new environments for our participants. Then inspired by these topics, further discussions and communications were promoted in breakout rooms. We expected this salon event to provide us with new ideas for living a better life here and a closer connection with each other in work and life.
In this report, we briefly reviewed 22nd Salon of Excellent and made a reflection referring to participants’ feedback.
Talk 1: Talk show delivered by hosts
Talk 2: Interview with Prof. Consalvi
Discussion in Breakout room
Concluding remarks
Evaluation of 22nd Salon of Excellence
Innovation: First, we used a talk show format instead of the previous format of the presentation. A host and two guests shared their lives as international students studying in Japan in a more relaxing and harmonious atmosphere. It successfully provided several topics and inspirations for the breakout discussions afterward in a funny approach. Secondly, we invited Prof. Consalvi as a special guest. In the past, communications were always limited among students, but this time we invited Prof. Consalvi, a super senior, to share his own experiences as a foreigner living in Japan. Additionally, this section greatly enhanced the relationship between students and Prof. Consalvi who is one of the main teachers in WINGS-PES courses.
Feedback:
(1) The overall rating of the participants was not bad.
(2) Comments and Suggestions from participants
Many participants thought it was a good opportunity to learn about and communicate with international students from different countries. But it would be better if the topic could be more specific.
Suggestions for subsequent Salons
(1) First of all, when using the Jamboard as a medium, be sure to remind participants that there are other contents on the afterward slides in addition to the presented slide.
(2) Second, before the breakout room discussion, explain the topic of discussion in detail and make sure everyone understand the task before grouping.
(3) Third, it is acceptable to disregard the language issue and believe that everyone is enthusiastic and motivated for the English discussion.
